There's a vague glow from the big windows surrounding the square. Street lights create circles on the ground. The night portier of Grand Hôtel meanders back and forth outside of the bright entrance of the hotel, dressed in a tall black hat and tail-coat. Apart from him, and a few taxi drivers leaning against their cars in the taxi cue outside the National Museum, the scene is deserted.
The ticking from the pedestrian crossing echoes loudly in the silence. Suddenly there’s a movement in one of the big windows of the bank headquarters. In the lines of frosted glass two figures can be seen broken up, reflected in the stripes. The ticking grows louder, and with the singing sound of an electric car driving by the figures materialize on the sidewalk outside of the bank, watching the tv-screens in its windows.
They begin to tell the story of someone they often meet here, Rameau. While they move around the square dawn slowly comes, and in the first light of day they disappeare back into the window reflections.
In Denis Diderots dialogue Le Neveau de Rameau a charlatanesque figure with a relativistic view on truth and moral is described. He makes his way as a gig worker in 18th century Paris, playing roles the emerging bourgoisie at present is willing to pay for: music teacher, panderer, violinist or fool. With him the line between person and persona is blurred. The characters in 1 x tragedi 1 x fars are seemingly practicing lines from Diderots dialogue, in an equally dissolved state of self. They seem to be stuck in time, or outside of time, but tied to the place.
